When we decide to buy our property, we usually don’t think about how much space we really need in the hallway. Perhaps we are charmed by that beautiful kitchen or large living room and don’t think about the practicality of other areas in our new home. Yet the truth is that a poorly organized hallway contributes to everyday stress.

Let’s for a moment consider what we might need to keep there. Coats and footwear may immediately come to mind; but where will we store all the hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas, handbags, briefcases, and childrens’ school bags?Once we have a better idea of how many things actually need to be stored, the next question is obvious. Where to store it all? Perhaps there is an additional storage room where we can keep seasonal things. If so, then in the hall you will only need a few hacks for coats and a beautiful shoe cabinet. This piece of furniture can even be so to speak the pearl of your entrance area.

Unfortunately, we often do not have an extra room to store seasonal items. What then? Can we use the space under the bed to store shoes and accessories in boxes? Or can we use some space in a cupboard in another room for our coats?

Designing a entry space can be complicated, because the layout of this room is often very small. Let’s take a brief look at 3 common problems and ways to solve them.

Narrow hallway with stairs

A staircase can often be a place to store everyday shoes and coats. But what if we can be creative and adapt the stairs themselves into drawers for storing seasonal shoes?

Porch entrance

What if your house has only a small narrow porch? Can you still use it to store everyday things? Whilst not the most beautiful, if you have no other choice, you can still make this space appealing. Why not decorate it with some striking wallpaper and beautiful floor tiles? Since the area is likely small, even expensive tiles will not cost too much, and certainly worth the investment if it makes you feel happy on a daily basis when coming home.

No hallway

What if you live in a house where you find yourself directly in the living room after opening the front door? In this case, I would recommend creating a hall space. It is important to place your everyday coats, shoes and other little things somewhere. By creating even a small entrance area, you can visually make your living room private and cozy. I don’t know anyone who feels good if they can see the front door and hear all the daily rumble behind it. Depending on the specific floor plan of your living room, you could opt for a built-in cabinet, which would optically separate it from an entrance area and be more soundproof too. Maybe all you have to do is separate the space with a built-in room divider. There are many possibilities.

Think of your visitors

Another thing we should think about is, where do we put the coats, shoes and bags of our visitors? What if we just don’t have a place to put these things in our hallway space? One practical way to deal with this is to use special hooks that you can temporarily put on some other door of your house. These hooks would be used only for visitors, (or we could move our coats on them before the visitors arrive). Our hallway will give a beautiful impression of how tidy and clutter free our home is. However, it is necessary to pay attention to the size of the door hook to match the width of your door. I once made this mistake myself and bought hooks that could not be used on any door at all!

Conclusion

A trendy way to decorate with white is to introduce a metal element. It adds a more expensive feel to your home. As well as traditional chrome, you can opt for either a gold or copper finish in your home. In an old country house brass would look fabulous as an accent material. Metal can be introduced to all parts of your home. From lighting, mirrors, picture frames to all other accessories, the list of options is endless. My personal taste is to only use it sparingly as a feature. This will give your space an elegant and more luxurious feel.
